Adult Education & Support
Learning and exploring spirituality never ends; it is a lifelong process. Our adult education and faith formation programming responds to the needs of congregation and community, as well as the passion and capacity of its leaders. If you want to champion and/or lead adult and inter-generational programs such as book discussions, workshops, or classes, please contact Rev. EB. We currently offer the following:
Dismantling White Supremacy Book Club
Semi-regularly on a Wednesday or Thursday evening, via Zoom
The book group began as a way for members of the church Social Justice Action Committee (SJAC) to educate ourselves about the history of settler colonialism, racism, and white supremacy here in the Americas, and to learn from current voices and perspectives. Here is a list of our common reads for anyone wishing to do their own exploration. Upcoming books and discussion dates are announced in the church newsletter, and we welcome newcomers to join us in our book discussions. Please contact the church office for more information.
Elders Circle
Second Wednesday of the month, 1:30-3:00, in a private home.
Are you around 80 years old or older? Want to build community with peers? Join Rev. EB and fellow congregants for conversation on elderhood, aging, and planning for the future. Contact the church office for the meeting location.
Heart of the Chalice
Monthly via Zoom on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:45 AM.
We are a small group of First Church congregants who gather monthly to support each other’s spiritual practices and to practice spiritual rituals together, such as meditation and chalice lighting. While we share a spiritual search for truth and meaning, we have no common creed. We listen deeply to what is in each person’s heart. We explore accessible readings, chosen by members—poems, short essays, and selections from various religious traditions. Members take turns with facilitation. We welcome you to join us for as often as you choose. Email chalice@firstchurchjp.org to learn more. You can read the Guidelines for Heart of the Chalice Sharing here to get a sense of how the meetings go.
Grief and Growth Group
Most Sundays at 12:45 in the Sanctuary
The Grief and Growth Circle helps participants work through grief experiences, struggles, questions and accomplishments. In a world where grief is often downplayed or discouraged, we offer acceptance: a place to openly express feelings, normalize and honor grief, and simply be heard. Both congregants and members of the public may participate. Please speak to a member of the group before joining: you can reach them by contacting the church office.
